Trustees need to be able to justify and document how all investments are consistent with the investment strategy and risk management requirements of the SMSF. All records and trustee minutes should be kept to show that all the circumstances of the fund have been taken into consideration in formulating the investment strategy and managing investments.

If an investment does not fit into the investment strategy, trustees should not make that investment. A trustee meeting can be held (and minuted) to review the strategy and determine if circumstances have changed, which would warrant appropriate amendments to the strategy to include that investment.
